Name:
Lovino Alessandro Raphael Vargas.

Representative of:
South Italy.

Gender:
Male.

Age:
Human: 20.
Historical: Created after Rome fell in 476 AD.

Brief personality:
South Italy is friendly and kind to women, but is strict and less social to men. Despite appearing to be tougher than his younger brother, he is just as cowardly and ineffectual, if not more so. He’s stubborn and has actually been described as being quite timid. Though he is not very skilled with his hands, it is said that he is a good pickpocket. He is also somewhat vulgar, often calling others “bastard” and ending sentences with “damn it.”
As a child, he often slacked off and slept when it came to chores; he was rather clumsy when he actually tried to do them. It is revealed that Romano is actually a hard worker in modern times, much to Prussia’s and German’s surprise. According to Germany, Romano is “a guy who can do what he puts his mind into.”

Brief physical description:
South Italy has dark brown hair and an olive complexion, unlike his paler-complexed brother. His eyes are green; however they are often coloured hazel or brown by Himaruya himself, who said that fans were free to use whichever eye colour they preferred for him, but noted that he often used a light green or light brown-like colour, officially.

Like his brother, he has a wild long curl that acts as his erogenous zone. It usually rests towards the right side of his head, but sometimes will show towards the left when he’s facing left. In his very first appearance in the web comic, South Italy’s shirt and belt were coloured white, but were later shaded in dark. The actual colour of the uniform is unknown due to it only appearing in black-and-white art. In most artwork and merchandise, he is shown wearing a khaki uniform in a different style than Italy’s (and more similar to Spain’s), with 3/4-length sleeves. But in the published manga and anime, he instead wears a virtually identical uniform to his brother, although it has different colours.

Brief history:
Since ancient times, Etruscan, Magna Graecia and other cultures have flourished in the territory of present-day Italy, being eventually absorbed by Rome, that has for centuries remained the leading political and religious centre of Western civilisation, capital of the Roman Empire and Christianity. During the Dark Ages, the Italian Peninsula faced calamitous invasions by barbarian tribes, but beginning around the 11th century, numerous Italian cities rose to great prosperity through shipping, commerce and banking (indeed, modern capitalism has its roots in Medieval Italy). Especially during the Renaissance, Italian culture thrived, producing scholars, artists, and polymaths such as Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Michelangelo and Machiavelli. Italian explorers such as Polo, Columbus, Vespucci, and Verrazzano discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, helping to usher in the European Age of Discovery. Nevertheless, Italy would remain fragmented into many warring states for the rest of the Middle Ages, subsequently falling prey to larger European powers such as France, Spain, and later Austria. Italy would thus enter a long period of decline that lasted until the mid 19th century.

After various unsuccessful attempts, the second and the third wars of Italian Independence resulted in the unification of most of present-day Italy between 1859 and 1866. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the new Kingdom of Italy rapidly industrialised and acquired a colonial empire becoming a Great Power. However, Southern and rural Italy remained largely excluded from industrialisation, fuelling a large and influential diaspora. Despite victory in World War I, Italy entered a period of economic crisis and social turmoil, which favoured the establishment of a Fascist dictatorship in 1922. The subsequent participation in World War II at the side the Axis ended in military defeat, economic destruction and civil war. In the years that followed, Italy abolished the monarchy, reinstated democracy, and enjoyed a prolonged economic boom, thus becoming one of the most developed nations and the fifth largest economy in the world by 1990.

Religious affiliation:
Roman Catholicism.
