| Name: Evelina "Eve" Rozanov Representative of: Sharashka (Gulag's secret experimental design bureau) Gender: Female Age: 20 in physical appearance, founded in 1930 Brief personality: Highly intelligent and hardworking, Eve is what most would consider the ideal scholar, possessing both a strong scientific mind, and a great capacity for creative thinking. She is fully committed and engaged in her studies, and once is set on a goal, she will not rest until she has achieved it. Therefore, if she finds herself interested in a topic or struck with an idea for a new machine, she will work tirelessly until the machine has been completed and the topic is fully understood. Eve is very good at the integration of theoretical principles into practical uses, often finding solutions from the most unlikely sources, which provides her with very good problem-solving skills. From an outsider's perspective, it is not uncommon for Eve to be perceived as an ice queen. She has an aura of leadership but is cold and unfeeling, unempathetic, uninterested and indifferent to everything that is happening around her. She operates on a military discipline that often makes her come across as dictating and robotic, and her dedication to engineering has unfortunately left her with a tunnel vision that excluded… Well, the rest of what life has to offer. The years of being a shut-in have inadvertently stunted her ability to socialize, or even pick up on most social cues. After all, the theories of communication and interaction are often far more nuanced than what is written on paper. Though she tries to pick her words carefully, her bluntness and naivete will often cause her to unwittingly offend someone. She misses jokes and takes sarcasm at face value, and she does not often consider that someone may be deceiving her. Hence, this also makes her extremely easy to manipulate and take advantage of. Deep down, she has a tender heart and boundless dedication and loyalty. Once she's dedicated herself to something, it stays that way to the very end. Beneath the ice and snow, Eve is a hopeless romantic who yearns for something more. Melancholic and wishful, she enjoys indulging in romantic novels, poetry, and watching couples as they pass her by. Though it does not seem as if her isolation affects her, Eve feels it keenly and is aware that her inability to properly socialize inhibits her from finding the relationship that she seeks, which causes her great sorrow and dejectedness. These emotions are what pushes her to confine herself further to her machines and ideas. When it comes to her independent experiments, however, Eve crosses treads the line of “mad scientist” precariously, often building random, nonsensical machines that range from very innovative and helpful to very life-threatening and reckless. It also does not help that she seems to have a penchant for testing those contraptions on herself – perhaps because she simply lacks the ability to ask someone to test them on – which often results in frequent visits to the nearest medical center. It very much seems as though the reason behind these machines and tests is simply, “because she can”. When she is building or conducting tests, she becomes an entirely different person to the cool, aloof person that most people see when she is walking down the halls or sitting in class. Almost to a Jekyll and Hyde extreme. Her careful, cautious persona is replaced with a reckless, irresponsible mad-lass who probably should not be given access to so many power tools. Brief physical description: Standing at 5'8 with a weight of only 125lbs, Eve would look perfectly at home at any fashion runway. With porcelain skin, long, slender limbs, tight with muscle and a lithe figure, Eve is not the most endowed of women but is nonetheless an ethereal creature. With legs that go on for days, she moves with purpose and military discipline; shoulders back, chin up, and back straight, giving her a regal and surprisingly sturdy appearance as she glides across the room. Her hands, however, are marred by various cuts and scars, particularly on her fingers and palms, where she had been cut countlessly on various parts and tools over the years. Champagne blonde hair falls to her waist and frames her smooth, oval-shaped face, complementing her baby blue irises. - Appearance:
Brief history:- The creation of the Gulag's secret research laboratories:
Sharashka was an informal name for secret research and development laboratories operating from 1930 to the 1950s within the Soviet Gulag labour-camp system. Etymologically, the word sharashka derives from a Russian slang expression sharashkina kontora ("Sharashka's office", which in its turn comes from the criminal argot term sharaga (шарага) for a band of thieves, hoodlums, etc.), an ironic, derogatory term to denote a poorly-organized, impromptu, or bluffing organization. The scientists and engineers at a sharashka were prisoners picked from various camps and prisons and assigned to work on scientific and technological problems for the state. Living conditions were usually much better than in an average taiga camp, mostly because of the absence of hard labor. The results of the research in sharashkas were usually published under the names of prominent Soviet scientists without credit given to the real researchers, whose names frequently have been forgotten. Some of the scientists and engineers imprisoned in sharashkas were released during and after World War II (1939-1945) to continue independent careers; some became world-renowned.
In 1930 Leonid Ramzin and other engineers sentenced in the Industrial Party Trial were formed into a special design bureau under State Political Directorate (GPU), which was then the Soviet secret police.
In 1938, Lavrenty Beria, a senior NKVD official, created the Department of Special Design Bureaus at the NKVD USSR (Отдел особых конструкторских бюро НКВД СССР). In 1939, the unit was renamed the Special Technical Bureau at the NKVD USSR (Особое техническое бюро НКВД СССР) and placed under the leadership of General Valentin Kravchenko, under Beria's immediate supervision. In 1941 it received a secret name, the 4th Special Department of the NKVD USSR (4-й спецотдел НКВД СССР).
In 1949, the scope of sharaskas significantly increased. Previously the work done there was of military and defense character. The MVD Order No. 001020 dated November 9, 1949 decreed installation of "Special technical and design bureaus" for a wide variety of "civilian" research and development, particularly in the "remote areas of the Union".[2]
The 4th Special Department was disbanded in 1953 when, shortly after Stalin's death, Nikita Khrushchev and other members of the Politburo had Beria arrested and executed for espionage and treason. Religious affiliation: N/A Any special powers or abilities: Mad inventing/engineering skillz. |
