Brief history:
Chongqing was first established during the 4th century BC by the Ba.She was the capital of the Ba and was called Jiangzhou but only began to be fortified after the Qin conquered the Ba.Then in 586AD, her city's name was changed to Chu prefecture and then later to Yu prefecture under the rule of the Zhou dynasties. In the Northern Song dynasty in 1103, her city's name was changed again to Gong prefecture before finally being named as Chongqing, meaning double happiness, in 1182.
She also served as a capital for the very very short Daxia and and Daliang dynasties. In 1644, after the fall of the Ming dynasty, many of Chongqing's people were killed when the area was conquered by Zhang xianzhon but the city was repopulated when the Qing dynasty was established.
Chongqing is located in the confluence between the Jialing and Changjiang river and in 1890 a British consulate was established there and Chongqing became one of the 1st inland port cities that would also see the opening of German, American Japanese and French consulates by the 20th century. In the 2nd Sino-Japanese war, Xiaoyue's city was used as a wartime capital by the Kuomintang party (though they were driven out by the Communist party in 1949) and many factories and universities were moved there temporarily.Chongqing also became an important center for anti-Japanese movements and suffered bombings but had relatively little losses of life compared to some other cities.
Under the Communist party, Chongqing was the capital of Sichuan until 1997, when she became a municipality.
