KNIGHTS 'N BITCHES

It was a dark and stormy night.

Background: This one king, not a truly bad man but a greedy old miser, has his eye on another kingdom, which is basically paradise; fertile and beautiful, with lots of classy artisans and thriving trade and such. But this other kingdom also has a really strong army, huge and well-funded and led by an elite knight: the rich king’s personal favorite, trained to the very peak of his fighting abilities and near-undefeatable. Only an idiot would challenge this kingdom in war. The greedy king only has one way into the land: marriage to the rich king’s cherished daughter.

He asks the good king for the princess’s hand several times, but his kingdom is fairly poor, and the rich king scorns him. Then, one day, the princess disappears. The rich king is furious, and jumps to the conclusion that the greedy king has kidnapped her. He sends his champion and the head wizard to threaten attack on the greedy king unless the princess is returned. His theory is only reinforced by the tracks of the greedy king’s favorite knight, which they find galloping back to the palace.

However, when the rich king’s people have stormed into the throne room and thrown the greedy king out the window into his own moat and he still denies that he kidnapped her, claiming some batshit story about a dragon, they go back to the place where they found the other knight’s tracks and notice something else: dragon-charred trees nearby. They realize that the greedy king’s stories were true and the princess really was kidnapped by the dragon. The greedy king’s knight ran into the dragon when he was on his way to kidnap the princess, and fled back to the castle. They decide that the knights should go after the princess together! (The wizard goes along because somebody has to provide intelligence.)

Meanwhile, the princess has made a friend: an elf who lives in the forest nearby. The dragon seems to have little interest in her besides keeping her hair in its stash of treasure, and she wanders when it is hunting during the day. The elf feeds her, befriends her, and helps her escape – and, having fallen in love with her somewhere in there, follows her back to the castle. They know to go at top speed and hide to escape the dragon, but their path is on a collision course with that of the knights and wizard…
